Favorite App Kicked From Your Favorite Streamer
« on: August 13, 2017, 08:03:51 PM »
As popular media streaming companies tighten their grip over their customers viewing choices, they may find themselves with fewer viewers.

Manufacturers of popular media streaming devices will restrict more and more what you can and can't do with their boxes. Not because they really want to, it's because large media content providers are flexing their muscle.

This can backfire and we have seen happen before with of the number one most popular media streamer at the time, the Apple TV.

While many users flocked to the Apple TV early on and sales were through the roof, it was not because we wanted to pay for their shows on iTunes.

Rather, it was because some enterprising individual had figured out a way to jailbreak the tightly controlled  AppleTV OS and install XBMC, which was an earlier version of Kodi. This also gave the AppleTV the ability to play avi and mkv files without transcoding.

Apple was having none of this because they wanted to limit their users to only access the iTunes store for their content so they worked extra hard to put a stop to this. Eventually, for a time, they were able to close the holes to jailbreaking on their latest and greatest model.

Did this help their sales go off the charts? No, people simply moved onto another media streaming platform that would let them do what they wanted.

Today the Apple TV is pretty much insignificant. There is no where the interest there once was and pretty much every major media streamer has surpassed it in sales.

Is there a lesson to be learned in this, you bet. Today we have Amazon Fires Sticks and Fire TVs flying off the shelf. Again it's not because Amazon's customers can't wait to get their hands on one to watch content from Amazon Prime Video. It's because they figured out this inexpensive streaming device can run Kodi and let them watch pretty much anything they want for free.

Amazon will one day most likely follow in Apple's footsteps and put tighter controls in place in their operating system to prevent side loading certain apps.

When it happens it will happen innocently enough. Users will be alerted to a new security patch or update and after it has installed their favorite app will no longer work.

Should this happen, there is still one device that will always work without missing a beat.  It's been around for years and the HTPC will once again gain popularity.

Until the next low-cost streaming device arrives and the cycle continues...
