Back to Basics - What is Roku?
« on: January 08, 2018, 05:19:23 AM »
Today we are going to start at the very beginning. You may have been thinking about eliminating your expensive monthly cable TV bill and have not heard about Roku yet. Or maybe you have and are really not quite sure what it does or how Roku works.

This will give you some of the basics and help you get started with Roku and streaming your media from the Internet.

What is Roku?

Roku is small device that is a video player or also known as a media streamer that attaches to your TV. There are even some TV's sold today which may already have a Roku inside.

Instead of playing DVDs, a Roku will play videos, movies and TV Shows that are streamed from the Internet. It will let you play content from Netflix, YouTube and if you have a Amazon Prime Account, you can watch movies and TV shows from Amazon Video as well.

Plus, you can add thousands of other channels to your Roku to play all kinds of content on almost every subject imaginable.

Your Roku will connect to the Internet either using a WiFi connection, or if the model you buy has an Ethernet connection you can hook it to your Router with an Ethernet wire. This is preferred method as it gives you the the most stable connection for streaming media.

The Roku Ultra is the only current stand alone model that still comes with an Ethernet connection.

Once you create an Account on Roku's web site from your computer, you can then link your Roku to your account from their Link Page. You will be asked to do this only the first time you set up your Roku at this webpage.

This is where you will add the code shown on your screen:

If you need help setting up your new Roku, be very careful with any phone numbers you may find on Google. There are a lot of fake phone numbers out there that want to charge you $100 to help you with Roku questions.
