Tip - How To Factory Reset Your Roku
« on: February 07, 2018, 05:08:08 AM »
There may come a time when a factory reset is needed for your Roku. This could be because your software became corrupted and your Roku is not working as good as when it was new, or because you want to sell or give your old Roku away.

Doing a factory reset or restore will wipe out all the setting and take your Roku back to the state it was in when you first opened the box and set it up when it was brand new. A factory reset will not fix hardware that is failing.

Since it only takes a few minutes to do a factory restore, it is a good idea to try it before deciding your Roku is beyond repair and buying a new one.

All your apps, network settings and other preferences will need to be entered again. So before you do a factory reset, power cycle your Roku first because often this can fix small problem and save you a lot of work.

How to Power Cycle Your Roku (Soft Reset) All Your Settings and Channels Will Remain

The easiest way to do a soft reset is to just remove power by unplugging it and plugging it back in after waiting 20 seconds.

If your Roku is hard to get to and is locked up or frozen, you can try to reseting it with the remote control by pressing the following buttons which should work on any Roku models.

On Your Roku Remote Press
Home 5X times
Up 1X time
Rewind 2X times
Fast Forward 2X times

Using the Roku Menus (Newer Models Sticks, 4,  Express, Premier, & Ultra)

From the Home screen, select “Settings” > “System” > “Power” > “System restart“.

Using the Reset Button (Older Models and Stick)

Find the “Reset” button on the back or bottom of the device. Some models will require a paper-clip to press the button. Press it once. If you hold it too long, it will do a factory reset and all your settings and channels will be wiped out.

HARD RESET - All Settings and Channels Will Be Lost

TIP: IF YOUR ROKU IS NOT RESPONDING AND BEFORE YOU HARD RESET YOUR ROKU, REPLACE THE BATTERIES IN YOUR REMOTE CONTROL

Sometimes when the screen on your Roku is black or your TV HDMI input or Roku is in sleep mode and your Roku is not responding, all you need to do is place new batteries in your Roku remote control. If the batteries get weak, it will not be able to send a signal to wake your Roku. Changing the batteries first can save you a lot of needless aggravation.

If a soft reset did not fix the problem, or you want to sell or give your Roku away, then perform a HARD RESET.

If your Roku Functions and you can get to the menus do this:

From the Home screen, select the following depending on your device:

“Settings” > “System” > “Advanced system settings” > “Factory reset“.
“Settings” > “Factory reset” > “Factory reset” > “Yes“.

If you can't access the menu because your Roku isn't responding to the remote, and your Roku has either a reset button or a small hole to insert a paper clip be sure to hold it long enough where your device will perform a hard reset and not just restart.

Once it has finished resetting and you plan on giving away or selling your Roku you are done. Otherwise, continue adding back all your settings like account information, network info and channels. Finally, it will most likely perform a system update to download the latest software, then you should be good to go.

Time For a New Roku?

If nothing you tired here works to fix your Roku, it may be time for a new model. The good news is if your Roku is older, a new model will be much faster and offer much better performance.

You can shop for new Roku models here. We like the Roku Ultra for both a Micro SD card and an Ethernet port which works the best for streaming.

If you want a stick be sure to get the Roku Streaming Stick + for best WiFi performance. These two are both 4K HDR capable Roku models and will work with all Roku channels.

You may also decide to get a Roku TV with the Roku software already built in. You can view all Roku TV models here.
